Having a mobile strategy isn't optional

According to comScore's 2017 Cross Platform Future in Focus report, people use their smartphone for non-voice activities over 80 times (171 minutes) per day. That's about 86 hours a month!

There was a time when having a mobile-friendly website was an extravagance. Then as mobile smart phones became commonplace, we started to see trees in "mobile first" design. Today, the "mobile first" philosophy is a requirement for any web application. And with the advent of progressive web apps (PWAs) making native desktop and mobile apps even easier to build and manage, we're quickly headed for a time when a native mobile app experience will also be required. In many industries, it already is.

This isn't anecdotal information. According to StatCounter, in 2018, United States Internet activity was from desktop web browsers 51.7% of the time, while 48.3% was from mobile phone (40.5%) and tablet (7.8%) devices. It's clear that if you don't provide a mobile experience, you could be excluding half of your audience! Some industries have higher or lower percentages of mobile users. But the trend is that mobile views are increasing.
